Delta Plane Hit by Firework on Approach to Chicago

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 was struck by a firework while descending toward Midway International Airport in Chicago. The flight landed safely, with no injuries reported.

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 carrying 52 passengers and six crew members was struck by fireworks on Saturday night while it was descending toward Midway International Airport in Chicago. According to the airline, flight 1076 from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport reportedly made contact with a firework on approach. The pilot told air traffic control that the plane had been hit at about 200 feet and described hearing a big bang. Controllers had warned of multiple homes near the approach end where fireworks were being set off. The flight landed safely and taxied to the gate, and no injuries were reported. Delta said the aircraft was inspected after landing and no damage was found. Chicago police said the plane was struck by an unknown object that caused minor paint damage. The Federal Aviation Administration said the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. local time. The event took place as fireworks were being used across the United States to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, and Washington, D.C. also held a 40-minute display at the National Mall.
