Apple has lost a major legal fight in the European Union over its iPhone software and App Store rules. The General Court in Luxembourg rejected the company’s challenge to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, or DMA, which gives some large tech firms “gatekeeper” status.
The court also rejected Apple’s arguments about its control of iOS and the App Store. One claim about iMessage was not accepted because the court found it legally unacceptable. The ruling matters because the DMA is meant to limit the power of big platforms and give users and developers more choice.
Apple said the decision could put safety and privacy at risk. The company plans to appeal to the EU’s top court.
