AI May Reshape U.S. Jobs Rather Than Simply Remove Them

McKinsey expects major changes in work by 2035, with job growth possible despite automation. New skills and qualifications could be key challenges.

AI could automate more than half of U.S. work hours by 2035, according to research from the McKinsey Global Institute. However, this does not mean half of all workers will lose their jobs. Technological and economic changes could reduce demand for workers by the equivalent of 36 million jobs. Meanwhile, economic growth could create demand for about 41 million jobs, leaving the country with more jobs overall.

Office and administrative support workers face especially large changes: about 80% of their current work hours could be automated. This figure describes tasks, not the number of jobs that will disappear. About 11 million Americans may need to move from shrinking occupations into different ones. Others could remain in their fields but need new skills as their responsibilities change.

Qualifications are another challenge. About 85% of growing employment requires a credential, such as a certificate showing training or skills. McKinsey suggests that employers reconsider which qualifications are essential. It also recommends tracking workers' moves into new roles. Companies should examine whether time saved by AI supports better service, new ideas, or more complex work.
