Young people in India started a protest group called the CJP in May 2026. They opposed the government’s decision to cancel tests for entry to medical school. India’s top judge also compared young people without jobs to cockroaches, a kind of insect. In July, the education minister left his job. This was an early success for the group.
The group now focuses on voting. Critics say India’s election office removed about 130 million names from lists of voters. Since 2 October, people have protested in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. They want election chief Gyanesh Kumar to leave his job. They also want the office to stop removing names until people outside it check its work. They want the old lists back before the next elections. The election office says its changes remove names of dead people and people without Indian citizenship. It also removes names that appear more than once.
The government has acted strongly against the protests. Police have held two people who speak for the group. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party refuse to change their position on the lists. They say the protesters hurt democracy, the system in which people choose their government.
