SEC agrees on common contracts for players

SEC schools will use common contracts to pay players. Some parts can change, and a decision about players moving schools will wait.

The SEC is a group of US university sports teams. Its school leaders voted on Monday to use common contracts for players. The change starts immediately. The Big Ten sports group already uses common contracts.

The contracts cover payments to players. Players also let schools use their names and pictures. Some parts of the SEC contracts can change. Each school can share up to $21.6 million with players this school year.

The SEC wants more control over its own rules. But it still needs protection against some legal challenges. Leaders also delayed a vote about players moving between SEC schools. An earlier rule made these players wait one season before playing. The SEC removed that rule in June 2021.
