Baseball teams play, and museums bet paintings

Two museums are backing their local baseball teams. The winner’s museum will borrow a Monet painting from the other museum.

The Milwaukee Brewers are playing the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2026 World Series. Two art museums are making a friendly bet on the games. One is in Milwaukee. The other is in St Petersburg, Florida.

Both museums own a painting by Claude Monet. The museum with the losing team will send its painting to the other museum for a short time. Before the third game, Milwaukee led by two games to none. The Brewers need two more wins, and either team can win its first World Series title.

If Milwaukee wins, its museum will borrow Houses of Parliament: Effect of Fog, London. Monet painted it in 1904. It shows a grey day in London, with two boats on the River Thames. If Tampa Bay wins, the St Petersburg museum will borrow Waterloo Bridge, Sunlight Effect, from 1903. It shows sunlight on the river and smoke from factories.

The two paintings belong to Monet’s large group of London pictures. The bet will bring them together for a short time. Each painting is now on show in its own museum. The museums will announce more about the loan after the World Series.
