A special building at Florida Southern College is open to visitors again. It is a planetarium, a place to watch shows about stars and space. Frank Lloyd Wright designed it, and it is the only planetarium he built.
The college is in Lakeland, Florida. It has 13 buildings with Wright’s designs, more than any other single place in the world. Workers finished building the planetarium in 1958, and it held its first show in 1960.
In 2004, the machine for showing pictures stopped working. The planetarium then stayed closed for more than 20 years. The work to repair and update it took nearly six years.
Workers put on a new roof and made repairs to keep water out. They also replaced more than 280 tiles around the outside of the building. Inside, they painted the walls, repaired the dark red floor and put the 60 seats back in their original circle.
The planetarium now has new sound and picture equipment. Visitors can watch regular public shows about space, including a show about Mars.
