Peru has changed the way people buy tickets for Machu Picchu. Visitors can no longer keep a ticket for later payment. They now have 15 minutes to finish buying it on the official ticket website. After that, the website offers the ticket to other people. Every ticket must have a name on it. Visitors must show an ID with the same name to enter.
Peru’s culture ministry wants the website to show only tickets that people can really buy. It is testing the new system. After the test, it may give buyers more or less than 15 minutes to pay. The limits on visitor numbers stay the same. Machu Picchu allows 5,600 visitors a day in the busy season and 4,500 in the quieter season. The Inca Trail paths allow 750 visitors a day.
Visitors can also buy tickets at the DDC-Cusco ticket office in Machupicchu Pueblo. The office has 1,000 tickets for sale each day. People can use these tickets the next day, not on the day they buy them.
