Scientists find 57 new kinds of sea animals

Scientists found 57 new kinds of animals in a deep canyon near Argentina. They also found plastic and fishing waste.

Scientists found 57 new kinds of sea animals in Argentina’s Mar del Plata Canyon. Their work took two weeks. They also found five new groups of related animals. Most animals came from a research trip in 2025.

More than four million people watched live videos of the trip. Many wanted to see a sea star. It looked like Patrick Star from the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. But it was not a new kind of animal. Another animal had two horns. Scientists called it Loki.

The team found 20 new kinds of tiny animals with hard outer bodies. They still need to check 90% of these samples. Scientists also found plastic and fishing waste. Even this deep place faces problems from human activity.
