Canada makes more maple syrup than any other country. Most comes from Quebec. The province keeps extra syrup for times when production falls. The group in charge expects these stored supplies to run out by February. Producers still make new syrup, but weather can change how much they make. Without the extra supplies, they have less help during a bad season.
In 2025, Americans rushed to buy Canadian syrup. They wanted to buy before President Donald Trump’s expected tariffs, or taxes on goods from other countries. Canada sold nearly 16% more syrup abroad that year. However, it made 5% less syrup. Sales abroad grew more slowly during the first eight months of 2026. They rose by just 2.5% compared with the same months a year earlier.
The producers’ group says there is enough syrup for the coming year. But it needs to build up the extra supplies again over the next few years. A good season in 2027 would help. Quebec has increased its syrup production capacity by 50% over the past six years. It has added more than 21 million places to collect liquid from maple trees. Producers use this liquid to make syrup.
