Indra Nooyi worked nights to pay for university

Before she led PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi worked at night to pay for her studies. She says people learn to lead through years of practice.

Indra Nooyi came to the United States from India in the late 1970s. She studied how to manage organisations at Yale University. Her parents could not help her pay for her studies. She worked at the front desk of a student building from midnight to 5 am, then went to class each morning.

Nooyi and other students from developing countries wanted to study hard and find jobs. Later, people respected them more because of their hard work. Nooyi believed America offered chances to do well, but success was not certain.

She finished her degree in 1980 and worked at several companies. She joined PepsiCo in 1994 and became its leader in 2006. She stayed in that job until 2018. During her time as leader, the company's sales grew by 80%.

Nooyi says people learn to lead over many years. She compares this learning to training for the Olympics. Her advice is to watch other leaders and learn from their mistakes. She also tells people to notice how leaders deal with problems and get others to follow them.
