NASA is developing new batteries for the Moon. The project is called SPEARS. These batteries use solid material instead of liquid inside. They could power tools, Moon vehicles and emergency equipment for people in space.
NASA tested small batteries in Virginia. They worked well from minus 60°C to 80°C. They also worked at minus 80°C, but less well. They survived temperatures from minus 170°C to 100°C without damage.
The batteries cannot work at minus 170°C. Small heaters must warm them before use. However, they do not need heat all the time. This could reduce the need for heavy equipment. The batteries are still small test models. NASA has not tested them in space yet.
