Britain's Sonay Kartal beat Jelena Ostapenko in Wuhan on Saturday. She won 7-6, 7-6. The 24-year-old reached her first WTA 1000 final, at one of the main women's tennis events. Only one other British woman, Johanna Konta, has reached a final at this level.
Kartal is number 170 in the world. She will now move into the top 50 and become Britain's top women's player. She spent six months away from tennis with a back injury. This is only her third event since her return.
Ostapenko had chances to win both sets, but Kartal kept fighting. Kartal will play Maja Chwalinska in Sunday's final. Chwalinska beat Iga Swiatek to reach the final.
