Some companies advertise jobs but are not looking for someone to start work. People call these ‘ghost jobs’. ResumeBuilder.com asked 1,011 adults about their job searches in the past two years. Some 86% said they had found an advert like this.
In the survey, 36% said they had spent at least four hours trying to get jobs they now thought were not real. Also, 58% had an interview but later thought the job was not real.
Old adverts and jobs advertised again and again can be warning signs. Some people check advert dates and company websites before applying. Others contact the company first. Experts also warn against job adverts that ask people to pay money before they start.
