The bank Goldman Sachs says artificial intelligence, or AI, could replace up to 9% of workers. That is about one in 11 workers. Its economist Joseph Briggs expects AI to help people produce 15% more in the same working time. This change could affect the US and other rich countries. Companies could also take on fewer new workers. This could reduce the number of people in work by another 3%.
Briggs says more job losses could come when the economy becomes weaker. In the past, companies often used new machines and cut jobs during difficult economic times. He expects the effects on workers to be temporary. Some people could find new jobs quickly. Others could stop working or looking for work. So the number of lost jobs is not the same as the number of people looking for work.
For now, AI has a smaller effect on jobs than people feared earlier in 2026. Only 23% of US workplaces use AI in their regular work. The economy also remains strong. This gives companies less reason to cut spending on workers.
