Hyatt unveils Times Square flagship with an enclosed free-fall ride

Scheduled to open in the second half of 2028, The StandardX Times Square will combine 1,800 rooms with rooftop swimming, a high observation deck and an enclosed free-fall attraction.

Hyatt has announced The StandardX Times Square, a flagship hotel that will occupy a supertall skyscraper under construction in Midtown Manhattan. Scheduled to open in the second half of 2028, the 1,800-room property will become Hyatt's largest hotel in New York City and rank among the city's largest hotels.

Beyond its accommodation, the hotel will offer a rooftop pool, an observation deck more than 1,000 feet above the ground and an enclosed free-fall thrill ride. The building, named The Torch, is backed by Extell Development Company and will also house a substantial range of restaurants, bars and nightlife venues.

Situated near Times Square in the theatre district, the property will draw on New York's theatrical identity. Its relatively simple but expressive rooms and public areas are intended to bring together the design, music and social atmosphere associated with The Standard.

The StandardX brand launched in 2023, with its first hotel subsequently opening in Melbourne, Australia. Hyatt presents it as a more pared-back counterpart to The Standard, offering simpler rooms, more informal service and a streamlined experience while retaining a connection to the surrounding city.

Despite its scale and unusual attractions, the Times Square hotel is intended as a one-off flagship rather than a template for future StandardX properties. Hyatt executive Amar Lalvani described the approach as bringing much of the activity usually found in the surrounding neighbourhood into the building itself.
