Helga Duffy, 99, has become the world’s oldest wing-walker. Wing-walking involves flying while securely attached to the outside of a plane. Guinness World Records confirmed her achievement after she flew at Rendcomb Airfield in Gloucestershire, England. The previous record belonged to Betty Bromage, 97, who had gained the title three months earlier.
Helga’s niece saw news about Betty’s achievement, and staff at Helga’s care home encouraged her to try. At first, Helga did not know what wing-walking was. Once she understood it, she wanted to take part. Although arthritis and a painful right knee made getting onto the plane a concern, she spent more than five minutes in the air. She wore special clothing and said she felt very safe.
After landing, Helga received an official certificate, which is now on display at her care home. Her flight also raised more than £1,600 for a regional air ambulance charity, which provides emergency medical help by air. Betty congratulated her and joked about beating the record when she turned 100.
