Almost three in four Americans worry about high food bills. Yet people and businesses in the US throw away 30% to 40% of all food. Some of this food is still safe to eat.
Shoppers often think fruit and vegetables with unusual shapes are not good. Low prices can make them think this too. Calling the food ‘ugly’ can help. It tells shoppers that the problem is only how it looks.
Companies also make new foods from food parts people usually throw away. These products often cost more than other foods. Research shows that clear labels and a good logo can help shoppers trust their quality. Lower prices and promises to help the planet are not enough on their own.
