Galaxy Ring gains more detailed sleep apnoea detection

An upgraded Samsung feature counts breathing interruptions each hour during sleep. It received FDA approval in July 2026, but Samsung stresses that its results do not replace a doctor's diagnosis.

Samsung has introduced more detailed sleep apnoea detection on its Galaxy Ring after receiving approval from the US Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, in July 2026. Sleep apnoea involves interruptions in breathing during sleep. The upgraded feature uses artificial intelligence to count how often these interruptions occur each hour.

Users must sleep for at least five hours on each of two nights within a ten-day period to receive results. The Samsung Health Monitor app can then indicate mild, occasional or frequent sleep apnoea. This may offer clues to people who feel exhausted despite sleeping through the night.

Samsung first received FDA authorisation for sleep apnoea detection on its Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring devices in February 2024. That approval covered only signs of moderate to severe sleep apnoea. The new version still checks for those signs, but adds information about the frequency of breathing interruptions.

Samsung stresses that only a doctor can diagnose the condition, although the readings may support discussions with healthcare professionals. The upgraded feature is also available on the Galaxy Watch 9 running Wear OS 7.0 or later. It will reach the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 through future software updates.
