Formula 1 has agreed to hold races in Rwanda for ten years. The first race will take place in the early 2030s, after workers finish a new track. Formula 1 last raced in Africa in South Africa in 1993.
The new track will be in Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. Plans show a six-kilometre track with 17 corners. It will go up and down hills. The exact race date is not yet clear.
Organisers want the African Grand Prix to bring more visitors, jobs and business. But Amnesty International has criticised the deal. The group says Rwanda uses sport to improve its image and turn attention away from its poor treatment of people.
