Netflix is developing a live-action adaptation of PUBG, with Donald Glover taking on several central roles. He will star in the series, write its scripts, direct and serve as an executive producer. His brother and frequent collaborator, Stephen Glover, will also contribute as a writer and executive producer.
The project draws on a game that has attracted millions of players worldwide and helped popularise the battle royale genre. PUBG places 100 players on an island, where they compete to survive until a single player or team remains. Its relatively limited narrative leaves considerable scope for Glover to develop a television story, rather than reproduce an extensive existing plot.
Glover's television background includes Atlanta, which earned seven Emmy awards and 26 nominations. The PUBG production also involves Michael Schaefer of NEON TV, Fam Udeorji of Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee of LV3H, KRAFTON's entertainment division. This brings representatives from television production and the game's developer into the same project.
For KRAFTON, the adaptation is part of an effort to extend PUBG beyond games and into film and television through LV3H. The game holds seven Guinness World Records. Separately, Netflix is developing a live-action Assassin's Creed series and a Gears of War feature film, adding further game adaptations to its production plans. Those projects concern different game franchises, rather than extensions of the PUBG series.
