Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the film rights to independent horror game Mouthwashing from developer Wrong Organ. Karyn Kusama, whose directing credits include Jennifer's Body and The Invitation, is attached to helm the adaptation. A release date has not yet been announced.
The screenplay will be written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, reuniting Kusama with the writers of The Invitation. Scott Derrickson, director of The Black Phone and Sinister, will produce. The project brings together several filmmakers with established horror credits.
Mouthwashing centres on the crew of a stranded spaceship as its members gradually lose their grip on reality. With relatively few jump scares, its horror instead draws on unsettling themes and surreal imagery. Its more grounded approach contrasts with the more outlandish horror of Resident Evil, whose adaptation by Zach Cregger was both a critical and commercial success.
While the film remains undated, the game has become more widely accessible since its original PC launch in 2024. It is now also available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as through Xbox Game Pass. Those releases allow players on additional platforms to experience the story ahead of its film adaptation.
