Sony Pictures Entertainment has bought the rights to turn the horror game Mouthwashing into a film. The rights came from Wrong Organ, the studio that developed the game. Karyn Kusama, who directed Jennifer's Body and The Invitation, is attached to direct the adaptation.
Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay will write the screenplay, having previously written The Invitation. Scott Derrickson will serve as producer. He is also known for directing the horror films The Black Phone and Sinister.
The game follows the crew of a spaceship that has become stranded. As the story develops, the crew members gradually lose their sense of what is real. Rather than relying heavily on sudden shocks, Mouthwashing uses disturbing themes and strange, dream-like images to create its horror.
There is no release date for the film yet, but the game is now available on more platforms. It first launched on PC in 2024 and has since become available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Players can also access it through Xbox Game Pass.
