Did an Egyptian god help shape the Oscar?

An old Egyptian figure looks like the Oscar award. An art dealer thinks there may be a link, but he cannot prove it.

A small bronze figure from Egypt is 2,700 years old. It shows Ptah, a god of creation and building. It drew attention at the Frieze Masters art fair in London. It looks like the Oscar award.

Art dealer Rupert Wace found a possible link. Newspaper owner William Randolph Hearst once owned the figure. He was a friend of Cedric Gibbons. Gibbons designed the Oscar in 1928. He often visited Hearst. Wace thinks the old figure may have given Gibbons the idea for his design. But he cannot prove this.

Someone bought the figure on the first day of the fair. The sale price is not public. The fair ran from 14 to 18 October 2026.
