Autonomous navigation helps Perseverance surpass planetary driving record

Perseverance has exceeded Opportunity’s long-standing distance record, with autonomous navigation guiding over 90% of its travel. NASA has extended the mission as the rover continues investigating Mars’s ancient environments.

NASA’s Perseverance has established a distance record for vehicles operating on another world, reaching 45.22 kilometres on Mars on 11 October, the mission’s 2,006th Martian day. The six-wheeled rover surpassed Opportunity’s 45.16-kilometre total in about five and a half years, compared with Opportunity’s nearly 15. The record-breaking drive itself covered 91.31 metres, carrying Perseverance beyond the previous benchmark.

Central to that pace is AutoNav, the autonomous navigation system that NASA says has guided more than 90% of Perseverance’s driving distance, versus approximately 5% for Opportunity’s earlier system. Using onboard camera images, AutoNav constructs a three-dimensional hazard map and selects routes between waypoints designated by engineers on Earth. By making navigation decisions as it moves, the rover avoids waiting for detailed instructions from mission controllers. It can cover up to 412 metres in a single Martian day, while its software processes around 600,000 measurement points with each assessment of the terrain.

NASA’s first mission extension began in October and will support exploration of Jezero Crater’s rim until approximately the end of 2028. Perseverance has collected 29 rock and soil samples across the crater’s former lakebed, ancient river delta and rim. Some regional rocks are roughly four billion years old and may preserve geological evidence erased on Earth by erosion and plate tectonics. A potential biosignature previously identified in the rock Cheyava Falls remains a possible indication of ancient life, not confirmation. Scientists also hope to identify evidence of ancient systems in which heated water interacted with rock.
