AI could help doctors see a baby's brain more clearly

A new computer model follows a baby's head movements during scans. It could help doctors find brain problems before birth.

Researchers at MIT, Boston Children's Hospital and Inria have developed an AI computer model called E(3)-Pose. It helps with MRI scans. These scans show a baby's brain before birth. Doctors can miss problems when the pictures are not clear.

A baby can move its head during a scan. This makes it hard to join the pictures together. The model follows these movements. It uses the similar shapes of the head's left and right sides to work out its position.

The model mainly learnt from scans of babies later in pregnancy. The researchers want to improve it for younger babies. These babies have more room to move. Finding brain problems earlier can make it easier to give treatment.
