Although Leonard Nimoy is best known for playing Spock in Star Trek, another television series became an important part of his career. He hosted In Search Of from 1976 to 1982, during the years between the original Star Trek series and its movies. The mystery program lasted six seasons, with a total of 144 episodes. Nimoy appeared on screen and also provided narration, speaking over the images.
The subjects ranged from Bigfoot to the Titanic. However, each episode opened with a warning that some of its information came from theories and guesses. The explanations it suggested were possible answers, rather than the only ways to understand the mysteries.
The series helped establish a style of television that investigates unexplained events. Its influence continued through later programs such as MonsterQuest. In 2018, the History Channel revived In Search Of with Zachary Quinto as its host. Like Nimoy, Quinto had played Spock, appearing in the 2009 Star Trek movie. His version ran for 18 episodes, considerably fewer than the original.
