Sony has filed a patent for a new PlayStation controller that would change the feel of its buttons in response to what is happening in a game. According to the patent details, a magnet-based mechanism could adjust resistance in real time, so a button might become harder to press during a weapon jam, a struggle, or another game event. The design also suggests that the buttons could briefly flex around a player’s finger before tightening, which would create a more pronounced sense of contact.
The idea appears to extend the kind of physical feedback already seen in the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, but it would apply the concept more broadly across the controller. Sony has not confirmed that the patent will become a shipping product, and many patents in the technology world never move beyond the concept stage. Even so, the filing points to Sony’s continued interest in making game controls feel more connected to on-screen action.
