Porto has been named Europe’s friendliest city in Condé Nast Traveller’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards. Lisbon finished second, giving Portugal the top two places. Readers voted for cities where local people warmly welcome travelers and offer help, whether visitors are choosing food at a restaurant or finding their way on the subway.
Porto’s relaxed atmosphere, food, and culture make it an attractive place for a short city vacation. The magazine highlights experiences such as spending time in squares decorated with tiles and sharing small local dishes with residents in neighborhood restaurants. Friendly encounters are part of the city’s appeal.
Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, stands on seven hills beside the Tagus River. Its narrow streets, traditional music, and creamy pastries contribute to its character, but the ranking also emphasizes its people. The city has a young, welcoming atmosphere, and its lively cafés offer visitors opportunities to join local life. Amsterdam took third place in the European ranking, followed by Stockholm in fourth and Valletta in fifth.
