Point Of Law, formerly owned by the King and Queen, won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Trained by Ciaron Maher, he had already won the Geelong Cup on his first appearance for his new owners in Australia. He entered the Melbourne Cup as the favorite.
Maher trained seven runners and achieved an impressive result: his horses finished first, second, third, fifth, and sixth. Zahrann took second place, almost four horse lengths behind Point Of Law, while Juja Kibo finished third. Joseph O'Brien's Sons And Lovers interrupted Maher's success by finishing fourth.
Ethan Brown rode the winner at the same track where a near-fatal fall in 2023 almost ended his career. Maher encouraged him to return to riding, and Brown praised the trainer's continuing support and confidence in him. The victory was a particularly important moment in Brown's riding career.
Royal Supremacy, another horse trained by Maher, set a fast pace and built a large early lead. Although Point Of Law was farther back than Brown had wanted, the rider remained patient. Once the horse had a clear path, he accelerated strongly to win, while Royal Supremacy eventually finished fifth.
