A spontaneous trip to the movies led Brooklyn Green, 21, to raise $146,000 for an elderly theater employee in Maryville, Tennessee. At the local AMC, Green noticed Mary collecting trash, her back bent as she pushed and pulled a trash cart. Struck by the effort Mary put into her job, Green recorded a TikTok video and launched a GoFundMe campaign. Her initial ambition was modest: she hoped contributions from family and friends might cover roughly one month’s rent. The campaign became another example of young people raising money for older employees working beyond retirement age.
Instead, the video went viral, drawing donations far beyond Green’s original expectations. More than $100,000 came in during the first day alone. By the time she returned to the theater the following day, hoping to surprise Mary, the fundraiser had gained another $46,000. Mary was absent, but the shift manager offered some background on her long working life. She had spent more than 45 years employed in theaters, he explained, and continued to enjoy the job. He also conveyed her concern that giving up work at her age could cause her life to deteriorate.
Green eventually arranged a meeting with Mary and surprised her with news of the donations. The encounter was recorded for the GoFundMe contributors, giving them a chance to see Mary’s response to their support. Mary expressed her gratitude to everyone who had given money.
