Jota Reflects on Growth After Lengthy Injury Absence

The Celtic winger says an emotionally difficult rehabilitation left him stronger, more grateful, and determined to appreciate every opportunity to play.

Celtic winger Jota believes the emotional challenges of an 18-month injury absence have left him stronger and more appreciative of his career. The 27-year-old Portuguese player reached another milestone in his comeback on Sunday, entering at halftime during Celtic's 7-1 victory over Hearts at Celtic Park. His lengthy absence followed a serious knee injury sustained in April 2025, as Celtic secured the league title at Tannadice.

The injury interrupted a period in which Jota had been rediscovering his form after difficult spells between his two stays at Celtic. At Saudi club Al Ittihad, he had been unable to play after the club exceeded its quota for foreign players; a frustrating spell at Rennes followed. Rehabilitation brought further difficulties, but Jota says confronting his emotional struggles allowed him to reconsider his priorities and develop a clearer understanding of himself. Acknowledging that others face more serious problems, he expressed gratitude for the experiences soccer has given him.

His enduring passion for the sport, he explained, sustained his determination to work toward full fitness even when progress proved difficult. Rather than rushing back, he wanted to complete his recovery properly, confident that he still had a long career ahead. The former Benfica player, who is not in Celtic's Europa League squad, now places particular value on every training session and match appearance. He rejects the idea that he must compensate for lost time: in his view, the personal growth gained during his absence means that period was not wasted.
