Autonomous Navigation Helps Perseverance Set Off-World Driving Record

Perseverance has surpassed Opportunity’s distance record in far less time, with autonomous navigation supporting more than 90% of its driving on Mars.

NASA’s six-wheeled Perseverance rover established a new off-world driving record on October 11, reaching 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers) during its 2,006th Martian day. It surpassed Opportunity’s 28.06-mile total after roughly five and a half years, whereas Opportunity accumulated that distance over nearly 15 years. The drive that carried Perseverance past the previous mark covered 299.6 feet. Its original mission had called for no more than 12.4 miles of driving.

Central to its progress is AutoNav, an autonomous navigation system responsible for guiding more than 90% of its total travel, compared with about 5% for Opportunity’s earlier system. Using onboard cameras, AutoNav constructs a three-dimensional map of hazards and selects routes between waypoints designated by engineers on Earth. This enables driving decisions without detailed instructions from mission controllers. Perseverance can cover up to 1,351 feet in a Martian day, while its navigation software processes approximately 600,000 measurement points with each assessment of the terrain.

NASA’s first mission extension, which began in October, will support exploration of Jezero Crater’s rim through approximately the end of 2028. Perseverance has collected 29 rock and soil samples across the crater’s former lakebed, ancient river delta and rim. Some regional rocks are approximately four billion years old and may preserve geological evidence largely erased on Earth by erosion and plate tectonics. A potential biosignature previously identified in the Cheyava Falls rock remains a possible indication of ancient life, rather than proof that Mars once supported it.
