Australian prime minister apologizes after podcast comments draw criticism

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued an unequivocal apology after comments he made about Kylie Minogue during a podcast interview drew criticism. The interview, which took place at the prime minister’s official residence in Canberra and was released at the end of last week, appeared on the Bush Deep podcast hosted by comedian Nikki Osborne. Osborne asked Albanese whether he would “shag, marry or date” Minogue, actress Nicole Kidman, or entertainer Rhonda Burchmore. Albanese first tried to avoid the question, saying he had just got married, but then answered, “Oh, Kylie, clearly,” and later added, “All of the above.” The remarks prompted a swift backlash. Independent MP Zali Steggall called them entirely inappropriate and said he needed to lead by example and call out sexism. Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson said they were disrespectful to women, embarrassing to Australians, and demeaning to the office of prime minister. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles said the government was committed to the elevation of women in society and noted that it was the first in history with equal numbers of men and women in cabinet.
