Alibaba, a China-based technology company, has decided to ban employees from using Anthropic’s Claude Code starting July 10. The company said the move is due to security concerns. Instead of Claude Code, Alibaba is directing workers to use Qoder, its own programming tool. Anthropic already blocks Chinese companies and foreign firms owned by them from using its models, and it has been working to close gaps that could let Chinese users reach Claude systems. Anthropic said a March experiment was designed to block abuse and protect against model distillation, which means training one AI model using the outputs of another. Alibaba still chose to treat Claude Code as high risk.
