Alaska Airlines Adds Anchorage–Tokyo Route for 2027

A Boeing 737 MAX 8 will operate Alaska Airlines' first nonstop service from its home state to Japan. Three new US routes are also planned.

Alaska Airlines plans to launch nonstop service between Anchorage and Tokyo's Narita Airport on May 13, 2027. It will be the airline's first nonstop connection between the state of Alaska and Japan. The 3,433-mile journey will take about eight hours.

Flights will operate daily through September 7, 2027, before returning three times a week in January 2028. No airline currently offers nonstop service on this route. Alaska will use a Boeing 737 MAX 8, a plane with a single aisle rather than the two aisles found on its larger aircraft.

Passengers at the front will have reclining seats like those used in first class on domestic flights. The aircraft will not offer the long-haul business-class seating available on the airline's larger planes. Alaska will become the first airline to fly a MAX 8 between North America and Narita.

The Tokyo service is part of a four-route expansion from Anchorage that also includes Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, and Nashville. Those three routes will operate on Saturdays from June 12 through August 7, 2027, also using MAX 8 aircraft. American Airlines already serves Anchorage–Dallas–Fort Worth, while Anchorage currently has no nonstop service to Austin or Nashville.
