Airbnb Restricts Cleaning Requests Before Checkout

A policy taking effect November 20 limits cleaning duties, clarifies where hosts can share rules, and introduces consequences for repeated violations.

Airbnb is setting clearer limits on what hosts can ask guests to clean before checkout. Starting November 20, hosts generally cannot require guests to wash dishes, remove bedsheets, take out the trash, or do laundry. The policy rules out tasks that take considerable time or effort, or that a cleaner would normally handle. However, simple requests, such as putting used dishes in the sink or gathering used towels, remain acceptable.

Under the changes, hosts can choose from seven standard house rules and add reasonable requests. These must appear in the dedicated section of the property listing. Hosts cannot introduce rules after booking through messages, signs inside the home, or conversations in person. House rules will also appear in the trips section and reservation reminders. The standard rules cover topics including arrival and departure times, guest numbers, smoking, pets, quiet hours, and commercial filming or photography.

Hosts cannot charge guests for failing to complete checkout tasks, and cleaning fees should cover ordinary cleaning between stays. Airbnb will flag requests that violate the policy, requiring hosts to remove them or appeal the decision. Repeated violations could lead to warnings on listings, reduced visibility in search results, or account suspension. Exceptions may apply in special situations, such as requiring trash to go into an animal-proof container in an area with bears.
