Victoria Madsen, 25, works at Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah. She fixes lifts that carry people up the mountain. She started about five years ago. Before that, she studied English in college and wanted to become a lawyer.
Madsen had no skills for fixing machines. Her team taught her. The job paid $3 more an hour than her old job. She left college. She now earns more than most of her friends. She got her own apartment and bought a new car.
She likes her work, but she still worries about money for a house or children. Other young people also want hands-on jobs. In a Thumbtack survey, nearly half were learning this kind of work or thinking seriously about it.
