UK to restrict social media use for under-16s

The UK government plans new rules that would block children under 16 from major social media platforms. The plan also includes some online games and live-streaming services, and it may take effect in spring 2027.

The UK government plans to introduce rules that would stop children under 16 from accessing social media platforms. The list includes Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X.

The plan is not limited to social media. It also covers some online games and live-streaming services, because these can allow children to contact adults they do not know.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the measures would reflect UK values and draw a line against the influence of big technology companies. He said a full ban was the right choice. According to the plan, the first stage of the rules should be set out by the end of the year, while the ban could begin in spring 2027.

The rules would apply across the whole UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Australia has already brought in a similar ban.
