Spotify says it has stopped suggesting more than 50 million songs this year. It calls these songs low-quality AI content or spam. AI means artificial intelligence: computer systems can use it to make music. The songs are still on Spotify. This is different from deleting them. Last year, Spotify said it had deleted more than 75 million spam songs for serious or repeated rule-breaking. It continues to delete songs for these reasons.
Over the past six months, Spotify has changed how it chooses songs for listeners. It now gives more attention to music from human artists. The company looked at songs people skipped or said they did not want. It says people now complain less about unwanted songs in its suggestions. Spotify uses listening habits, song information and computer tools to find problem songs. These tools cannot always tell if AI made a song.
More than 300,000 human artists now have a mark to show they are real people. Thousands of artists with AI identities also have labels. Spotify normally does not suggest their music. However, people may get these suggestions if they follow the artist.
