Sony has confirmed that, from January 2028, it will end the production of physical Blu-ray discs for all new PlayStation games. New releases will be sold as digital codes, either through the PlayStation Store or in retail outlets. The decision formalises a shift that has been building for years as players have increasingly chosen digital media over physical copies. Sony says that more than 85% of PlayStation game sales now take place through digital stores. The wider market points in the same direction: in the United States, physical game spending fell to $1.5 billion in 2025, its lowest level on record. The change is likely to weaken the second-hand market and reduce options for collecting, trading, reselling, or lending games. It also revives the debate about digital ownership, since a digital purchase gives access through a licence rather than a physical copy. The move suggests that future PlayStation hardware, including the next console generation, may not include a standard disc drive.
Sony sets 2028 end date for new PlayStation game discs
Sony will stop making physical discs for new PlayStation titles from January 2028 and move to digital code sales. The shift reflects the dominance of digital purchasing and could reshape collecting, resale, and future console design.
