Sony has said that it will end physical disc production for new PlayStation games from January 2028. From then on, new releases for PlayStation consoles will be sold only as digital download codes. These codes will be available through the PlayStation Store or in retail shops. The company says that consumer habits have moved strongly towards digital media, and that more than 85% of PlayStation game sales now happen through digital stores. The change also affects collectors and the second-hand market, because players will no longer be able to trade, resell, or lend new games in the same way. Sony has not ruled out retail stores, but the box will contain a code rather than a disc.
