SK Hynix says memory chip shortage could last until 2030

SK Hynix made record sales and profit. But it says the world could need more memory chips than companies can make until 2030.

South Korean company SK Hynix makes memory chips for electronic devices. On 28 October, it said demand could stay higher than supply through 2030. Making the newest chips is difficult. Building new factories also takes a long time.

The company reported record results for the third quarter of 2026. It made 104.6 trillion won from sales. Its profit from its main business reached 83.3 trillion won. Strong demand for advanced memory chips helped these results. These include chips for artificial intelligence, or AI.

SK Hynix has long-term deals with 14 large customers. These deals cover more than half the chips it can make in 2027 and 2028. Some customers are large companies with online computing services. However, higher memory prices put pressure on makers of phones, computers and games consoles. SK Hynix expects shipments of phones and personal computers to fall as memory prices rise.

Shares are small parts of a company that people can buy. SK Hynix's share price rose about 10.9% on the day of the results. But before that rise, the price fell by more than half from its highest point in June. Investors worry that spending on AI could slow.
