Scientists find 57 new kinds of sea animals

A sea trip off Argentina became famous for a funny-looking starfish. It also helped scientists find 57 new kinds of animals.

In August 2025, scientists explored the deep sea off Argentina. They used a robot to collect animals. People watched the trip live online. A starfish became famous because it looked like Patrick from SpongeBob.

Later, scientists from different countries met in Buenos Aires. In two weeks, they named 57 new kinds of animals. They also named five new, larger groups of animals. The finds included corals and sea cucumbers.

Most of the animals came from Mar del Plata Canyon, a deep valley under the sea. The trip was part of Ocean Census. This project works to record deep-sea life around the world. Climate change and mining on the sea floor could harm this life.
