Point Of Law leads Maher's Melbourne Cup success

Point Of Law, formerly owned by the King and Queen, won the Melbourne Cup under Ethan Brown. Trainer Ciaron Maher took all three top places.

Point Of Law, previously owned by the King and Queen, won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in Australia. Ridden by Ethan Brown, he led a strong result for trainer Ciaron Maher, whose horses finished first, second and third.

Royal Supremacy, another horse trained by Maher, set a fast pace and built a large lead. Brown kept Point Of Law calm before finding a clear route forward. The horse then increased his speed sharply, passing Royal Supremacy on his way to victory.

Zahrann finished second, almost four horse lengths behind the winner, while Juja Kibo took third place. Maher entered seven horses in total and also trained the fifth- and sixth-place finishers. Royal Supremacy eventually finished fifth. Maher said he felt very proud of his team.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Brown, who nearly died in a fall at Flemington in 2023. Maher encouraged him to return to riding and continued to show confidence in him. Point Of Law had moved to Australia after a private sale and won the Geelong Cup on his first appearance for his new owners. Maher's previous Melbourne Cup victory came in 2022, when he trained Gold Trip together with David Eustace.
