Kimi Antonelli became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history on 1 November 2026 after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. Max Verstappen won the race ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes driver had needed only ninth place to secure his first championship, regardless of his rivals’ results.
At 20 years and 68 days, Antonelli broke the record Sebastian Vettel had held since 2010. Vettel was 23 years and 134 days old when he claimed his first title. Antonelli also became Italy’s first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a wait of 73 years.
The Italian has won nine races in just his second Formula 1 season. With 380 points after 19 rounds, he now has a lead that no rival can overcome in the remaining events. He started fourth in Mexico City and overtook Charles Leclerc to claim third place.
An emotional Antonelli thanked Mercedes, his family, his friends and his supporters after the race. He credited the team’s strong car and consistently good performances with giving him a chance to win the championship. Although he had felt more nervous during the weekend, he said he could now enjoy the rest of the season.
