How the film team made Rocky move

People moved Rocky in most scenes, but a machine helped in a room full of screens.

Project Hail Mary comes from a book by Andy Weir. Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a teacher who travels into space to save Earth's sun. There, he meets Rocky, a creature from another world.

James Ortiz gives Rocky his voice and leads the team that moves him. The team mostly used a puppet. Ortiz wanted Rocky to move more freely than the machine version could.

But the team used the machine version in a room on Grace's ship. Screens showed pictures of Earth. The puppet operators' reflections appeared on the screens too. Removing them later with computers could damage the pictures. The machine version helped solve this problem. The team used it only a few times.
