Brent Spiner lost a Star Wars job over a difficult name

Before he played Data in Star Trek, Brent Spiner lost a radio acting job. He could not say the name of a Star Wars ship.

Brent Spiner played Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Before that, he got a job on a Star Wars radio show. But he lost the job because he could not say ‘Millennium Falcon’, the name of a ship. His line told a captain that the ship had landed.

Spiner talked about this on Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny. He presents the chat show with fellow Star Trek actor Jonathan Frakes. Their guest, Terry Matalas, asked him about losing acting jobs. Spiner felt embarrassed about the story. He tried to say the ship’s name again and had trouble again. He does not remember his character or which Star Wars radio show he worked on.

The first Star Wars radio story came out in 1981. The next two came out in 1983 and 1996. Many years after losing his radio job, Spiner got another Star Wars part. In the 2010s, he played the voice of Gall Trayvis in the cartoon series Star Wars Rebels.
