A new SemiAnalysis assessment suggests that premium AI subscriptions are under real margin pressure. According to the report, a fully loaded ChatGPT Pro account could cost OpenAI roughly 14,000 dollars a month to serve, while the user pays 200 dollars. For Anthropic, the comparable Claude Max plan may create around 8,000 dollars in processing cost at full capacity. The tests covered long coding jobs and more complex agentic AI workflows, which can consume far more tokens than a normal question-and-answer exchange. As a result, direct API-style use can become many times more expensive than the monthly fee.
The report says OpenAI’s margins are particularly fragile: in some lower tiers, losses begin once usage passes 11.4 per cent, while in the company’s most advanced plans the break-even point falls to 5.7 per cent. Anthropic appears somewhat stronger, with Claude Pro and Claude Max 5x roughly breaking even at 20 per cent usage, and top-tier plans nearer 10 per cent. The wider industry is responding by routing easier tasks to cheaper open-source models and reserving stronger systems for harder work. SemiAnalysis also argues that future gains in data-centre scale, model efficiency and new hardware could reduce costs over time, although the most powerful flagship systems may still be too expensive to bundle into standard subscriptions.
