Fewer US workers feel interested in their jobs

Interest in work has fallen to its lowest level since 2011. People working away from the office saw the biggest fall.

Fewer than 30% of US workers feel interested and involved in their work, Gallup reports. This is the lowest level since 2011. The share fell by two points from the last three-month period. This means about 3.2 million fewer workers feel involved in their jobs.

The share of actively disengaged workers rose from 17% to 18%. For people working away from the office all the time, interest and involvement fell by five points. For people working at their workplace, the fall was only about one point.

The fall was sharpest at companies using artificial intelligence, or AI computer tools. This was true for people working away from the office all the time or some of the time. A July survey found higher interest in work at companies using AI. But this lead became much smaller for these two groups in the latest survey.

Only 46% strongly agreed that they knew what their job expected from them, down three points. Also, 37% strongly agreed that their manager or someone at work cared about them as a person. This fell from 40%. Gallup questions whether managers give enough help and clear information as companies bring in AI.
